    Therapists encounter this complicated mix of diagnoses in everyday practice. This seminar addresses the ethical and practical dilemmas in assessing and treating

    co-occurring disorders. Presenter Dr. Frances Clark-Patterson will discuss ethical implications in practicing in situations which challenge a clinician’s scope of training and will provide insight into understanding when referral is most appropriate.  Other issues addressed in this seminar include:

    • Assessment techniques for co-occurring mental health and substance abuse issues.
    • Signs and symptoms: differentiating between chemical dependence and mental illness.
    • Stages of change and utilization of motivational techniques.
    • Substance-induced disorders.

    About the Presenter:

     

    Dr. Frances Clark-Patterson received her Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from California Southern University and has conducted professional trainings statewide and nationally for more than fifteen years on mental health, addictions and professional counseling issues.  She is a certified Masters Addictions Counselor (MAC) and Qualified Substance Abuse Professional.  In 2005 Dr. Clark-Patterson was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by TAADAC (Tennessee Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors), and in 2006 received NAADAC’s (National Association of Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselors) National Professional of the Year Award, the Mel Schulstad Award.  Other topics on which Dr. Clark-Patterson has presented include Sexual Transference and Countertransference, Cultural Proficiency in Counseling, and Self Care for the Helping Professional, among many other topics.  She is the owner of Footprints Consulting Services, LLC in Nashville.
