BILL PURCELL RECEIVES JACK C. MASSEY LEADERSHIP AWARD
Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee recognizes Nashville former mayor’s leadership and advocacy
The Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee honored former Nashville mayor Bill Purcell for his leadership and advocacy with the 2007 Jack C. Massey Leadership Award on Tuesday, November 13th. The award is presented in recognition of outstanding community leadership and considerable contributions that improve the lives of Middle Tennessee’s citizens.
The Jack C. Massey Leadership Award is presented biennially by the Mental Health Association of Middle Tennessee (MHAMT) to recognize superior leadership as exemplary of the highest state of mental health. The ultimate outcome of quality leadership is in harmony with the Association’s goal of a healthy community. Good leadership alleviates and often prevents the impact of daily stress on people by promoting positive change and fostering a sense of community well-being.
The award honors individuals whose leadership and accomplishments have enriched the quality of life for citizens of our community. The endeavors of these special individuals encompass a broad spectrum of activities and organizations. Recipients of the Massey Leadership Award are Ambassador Joe M. Rodgers (1986), Leah Rose Werthan (1988), Buddy Killen (1991), Governor Ned McWherter (1993), Senator Howard H. Baker, Jr. (1995), Annette Eskind (1997), Alyne Massey (1999), Dr. William O. Whetsell, Jr. (2001), William Cochran (2003), David Ingram, John Ingram, Orrin Ingram, and Robin Ingram Patton (2005) and Mayor Bill Purcell (2007).
The Mental Health Association’s Jack C. Massey Leadership Award is designated for individuals who extend themselves beyond the normal level of human achievement to discover and implement new ideas. As leaders, their joy comes from using their talents and resources to make a lasting impact on our community. Recipients of the award should reflect a quality of informed leadership that is guided by inspiration and integrity. Their endeavors are not limited to one sphere of influence, but encompass a broad spectrum of community activities and concerns. Their actions have earned for them the respect and admiration of citizens in all walks of life. The spirit of this recognition is further defined by naming this prestigious award for a man who personifies leadership in Nashville: Jack C. Massey.
A bronze medallion sculpted by noted Nashville artist Alan LeQuire commemorates the Jack C. Massey Leadership Award. At the center of the eight-inch medallion is a profile of Mr. Massey in bas relief. Smaller figures depict Nashville’s replica of the Parthenon, three stars representing the state of Tennessee, and the mental health bell. The words The Jack C. Massey Leadership Award and Mental Health Association in Nashville appear around the circumference of the circle. The first casting was presented to Mr. Massey and the second casting to Ambassador Joe M. Rodgers, the first recipient of the award.
